Bernardo Sepúlveda Amor

Bernardo Sepúlveda Amor ( born December 14, 1941 in Mexico City) is a Mexican lawyer, politician and diplomat. From 1982 to 1988 he was Secretary of his home country. Since 2006 he has been a judge at the International Court of Justice, where he also serves as Vice President since 2012.

Life

Sepúlveda Amor was born in 1941 as the son of the physician and professor Bernardo Sepúlveda and his wife Margarita Amor de Ferreira. He studied law at the UNAM and completed his studies in 1964 magna cum laude. He then went to the University of Cambridge, where he in 1965 a diploma in international law and the 1966 LL.M. acquired.

From 1996 to 2005 Sepúlveda Amor was a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations and was at the same time from 1997 to 2005 Counsel of the Mexican assembly ICA.

Since February 6, 2006 Sepúlveda Amor judge at the International Court in The Hague, where he had worked as an ad hoc judge previously in the case of Avena and Other Mexican Nationals. His term of office expires as scheduled in 2015. On February 6, 2012, he was elected for three years as Vice President of the Court.

Sepúlveda Amor teaches international law since 1967 at the Colegio de México, where he served as Associate Research Fellow from 1993 to 2006. He was a guest lecturer at various academic institutions in his home country, including at the UNAM, Centro de Investigación y the Docencia Económica ( CIDE ), the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México ( ITAM ) and the Instituto Matías Romero de Estudos Diplomáticos of the Mexican Foreign Ministry.

He is married and has three sons.

Awards

For his services Sepúlveda Amor has won several awards. So in 1984 the Prince of Asturias Prize, and he was awarded in 1985 along with the other members of the Contadora Group by UNESCO Simón Bolívar Prize. He is a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, was awarded the Grand Cross of the Orden de Isabel la Católica, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Liberator San Martin, Grand Cross of the Order of Christ, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Southern Cross, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Rising sun, he is also a Grand Officier of the Legion of Honour. From the University of San Diego ( 1982) and the University of Leningrad (1987 ) In addition, he was awarded an honorary doctorate.
