Bernd Hartstein

Bernd Hartenstein ( born October 26, 1947 in Ostrava ( Peter Berg), † 23 February 2002 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German sports shooter and trainer. He won with a small-caliber rifle 1980, the Olympic silver medal for East Germany.

Hartenstein started for the GST- Club Leipzig. He was Junior Champion in 1968 in the GDR. From 1972 until he won the 1980 East German championship title with a small-caliber rifle, both in the three positions, as well as in the prone position; in addition, he also won league titles with the air rifle.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Hartenstein placed ninth in the three positions, at the World Championships in 1979, he finished behind Nonka Matowa from Bulgaria in second place. Also he won silver at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, where Viktor Vlasov won from the Soviet Union.

Hartenstein won several medals with the East German team at the World Championships 1981 he won together with Frank and Andreas Rettkowski tungsten in the team standings for the kneeling position. 1985 won Hartenstein another individual medal at a World Cup: In the prone position, he finished behind Kiril Ivanov took second place in the prone position.

Trained as an electrical engineer graduated from a sports studies throughout his career. After 1990 he was country manager in Hesse. In March 2001, Hartenstein ill with leukemia, the Hessian Protect Association called on to be a bone marrow donation. Although reported several hundred people, it took almost a year before a suitable donor was found. Ultimately, this help came too late, Hartenstein died in early 2002 in the Frankfurt University Hospital.

1980 Bernd Hartenstein was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
