Bernhard Heinrich Overberg

Bernhard Heinrich Overberg (also Bernard Heinrich Overberg Overberg or Bernard, born May 1, 1754 Voltlage; † November 9, 1826 in Münster) was a Catholic theologian and educator.

Life and work

Overberg was consecrated on December 20, 1779 by Bishop William of Alhaus a priest and appointed in 1783 by the Vicar General Franz Freiherr von Fürstenberg as head of the Normal School in Münster in Münster, where he held teaching courses for teachers. So he designed as a teacher of teachers, the educational level in Munster and Westphalia. 1809 he was appointed rector of the seminary, 1816 Consistorial and school board. In 1818 he received the Prussian Red Eagle Order 3rd class. In 1823 he became an honorary member of the chapter.

Overberg was known by the pattern liable for their time " General Education Ordinance for the Munsterland " September 3, 1801. In it, he recommended teaching conversations instead of pure memorization. From 1789 Overberg pastor of Amalie von Gallitzin was until her death in 1806.

After Overberg numerous schools and educational institutions are named, such as the Overberg College in Muenster, also numerous roads throughout the country. Among his important students included Josef Annegarn.

On the occasion of the 250th birthday of Bernhard Heinrich Overberg found in 2004, numerous events in Voltlage instead. The closing Mass celebrated this festival year Bishop Franz -Josef Bode of Osnabrück.

Overberg was also dean and pastor of Our Lady above water. His grave is located since 1902 in the sanctuary of Überwasserkirche in Münster.
