Bernhard Thalheim

Bernhard Thalheim ( born March 10, 1952 in Radebeul ) is a German computer scientist and professor of the Department of Information Technology Systems at the Christian -Albrechts -University of Kiel. He has published groundbreaking papers on conceptual modeling and its underlying theory.

Life

From 1971 to 1975 Thalheim studied mathematics at the Technical University of Dresden. In 1979, he became the Dr. rer. nat. PhD in Discrete Mathematics at the Moscow State University. In 1985 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Dresden in the field of theoretical computer science.

From 1986 to 1989 Thalheim worked as a lecturer at the Technical University of Dresden. Subsequently, he taught and conducted research from 1989 to 1993 as professor and chair at the University of Rostock. In the years 1993 to 2003 he was Dean of Technology and at the Brandenburg University of Cottbus. Since 2003 he is Professor of the Department of Information Technology Systems at the Christian -Albrechts -University of Kiel.

In addition, Bernhard Thalheim was a visiting professor at Kuwait University from 1988 to 1990 and in 2004, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008 Visiting Professor at the University of Klagenfurt ( Alpen- Adria-Universität Klagenfurt) in Austria. In 2003 he was a visiting professor at Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2006 and a visiting professor at Massey University in New Zealand.

In 2005 he was selected for its achievements in the field of Information Systems Engineering Kolmogorov Professor eh the Moscow State University and was the fifth scientists worldwide to be awarded this way. On 22 October 2008, he was awarded the Peter P. Chen Award for his outstanding contributions to the research area of conceptual modeling.

He is the founder of the German branch of DAMA, is Vice - Chair of the Steering Committee of the Foiks conferences and member of the Steering Committee of other conferences, including ER, ADBIS, ASM and NLDB. He is the editor of Data and Knowledge Engineering and other journals and a member of the Advisory Board of dataport.

Scientific Contributions

Conceptual modeling

Thalheim published fundamental contributions to conceptual modeling theory and the Science of Conceptual Modeling on different levels of abstraction and application areas. These include the development of his Higher -Order Entity-Relationship Model, the book Dependencies in Relational Databases and Chapter 6, 12 and 17 of the Handbook of Conceptual Modeling.

The Higher -Order Entity-Relationship Model ( HERM ) and the Book of Dependencies in Relational Databases are used as the basis of system analysis and design methods, CASE tools and repository systems. The HERM is the basis for a number of commercial projects in Germany and Europe and is cited as a reference for the basics of database management systems and entity-relationship modeling.

Developed by Thalheim HERM has its roots in APG Brown and his invention of the Entity -Relationship Model concept, but also attacks other on basic ideas earlier work, such as by Peter Chen developed and promoted primarily by practitioners.

Conceptual modeling for IT Basics

Scientific articles about conceptual modeling foundations and theory forming spanning a range of IT problem solving work, such as the semantics in databases for generalized functional dependencies for a user-friendly database design; Co - design as a holistic approach for collaboration and cooperation in the design of information system applications; Micro, meso and macro levels of the working processes of users to develop collaborative framework for distributed Web Information Systems; the conceptualization of theories in various fields of application as the basis for content management systems; Model Suites as design theory and based on Multi- Model Engineering for the handling of information system models and their complexity arose by evolution; Business Process Modeling and notations that go beyond the modeling of business processes lead to database management basics; and the systematic development of Internet sites for the development of Webinformationssystemen.
