Bertrand de Billy

Bertrand de Billy, ( born January 11, 1965 in Paris ) is a French conductor.

Life

He was born in Paris, where he received his education and worked first as an orchestral musician, very soon as well as a conductor with various orchestras of his native city before he decided to go to Germany to work his way as an opera conductor from scratch. He began as assistant conductor and Managing General Music Director in Dessau; his path led him then to Berlin and Vienna, where he drew attention to himself with the premiere of Carmen in 1994 at the Volksoper in Vienna for the first time.

From 1996 to 1998 he was principal conductor of the house where today his interpretations of Mozart, but also his musical realization of the Harry Kupfer production of Boris Godunov are remembered. In parallel, developed very quickly for an international career. He appeared at the Staatsoper in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, as well as from 1996 at the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, La Monnaie in Brussels and at the Opéra National in his hometown of Paris.

Bertrand de Billy was from 2002-2010 chief conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. He is a Knight of the French Ordre national de la Légion d' honneur, the Ordre national du Mérite and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2010 he received the Golden Badge of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria. In addition, Bertrand de Billy is on the board of the European musical theater academy.
