Beruniy ( karakalpakisch: Biruniy ) is the capital of the eponymous district in the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan in Central Asian Uzbekistan. The city Beruniy itself, located on 87 m above sea level, is directly republic and has, according to a recent estimate, about 54,590 inhabitants. The last census showed 1989 37.800 inhabitants.
Beruniy lies on the right bank of the Amu Darya River, about 20 km northeast of Urgench. By 1958, the city bore the name Шаббаз Shabbaz, now it is named after the Persian scholar al -Biruni, who was born in the area of today's Beruniy in 973 in the city at that time Kath. The status of a city received Beruniy 1962.
