The Bessarabska Square (Ukrainian Бессарабська площа / Bessarabska ploschtscha ) is a square in the center of the Ukrainian capital of Kiev at the end of Khreshchatyk and the Taras Shevchenko Boulevard.

The central building of the square is the famous Bessarabska market hall. The Bessarabska Square, is adjacent to the Maidan Nezalezhnosti and the European Square, one of three places on Khreshchatyk.

History

In the 18th century, was instead of the square today a cemetery of the Lutheran church of Kiev, a small lake and a stagecoach station. The late 18th century / early 19th century, was built here a market where farmers from the region of Bessarabia their goods, especially wine and fruit hawking, and so the square right gave its name. 1874 was called to the place in Bohdan Khmelnitsky space because they wanted to build the Bohdan Khmelnitsky monument here. After the monument was erected in 1888 at the Sophia Square, the place bekahm its old name back.

Had the end of the 19th century have ruled bad hygienic conditions in the market, the one of Kiev " sugar barons " of the city of 500,000 rubles inherited to build a market hall. The Warsaw architect Henrik Gai then built in the years 1910 to 1912 a 2500 m² big market hall along with a restaurant and inn in the rational youth style with elements of constructivism. The hall has a 15 meter high glass roof and one with reliefs adorned with livestock and peasant scenes facade. Today, the Hall of 360 stalls, shops and catering establishments is being used. Under the glass dome, which is the hall in front, there is a two-storey entertainment complex and fast-food restaurants.
