The Bettina School is a high school in Frankfurt am Main, Westend district, named after the writer Bettina von Arnim. At the school, about 997 students from about 69 teachers and 14 student teachers are taught.

History

The Bettinaschule goes back to the Urban founded in 1855, higher public school for boys and girls in Bock home, which was then still an independent city on the outskirts of Frankfurt. The public school was divided in 1877 into a young ladies school and a school for boys. The latter is the Liebig school today. After the incorporation Bock 's home in 1895, the school in 1898 was named the Victoria School, probably after Empress Auguste Viktoria. The Victoria School was moved into an impressive new building at the Senckenberg plant in southern West End, immediately adjacent to the Wöhlerschule. 1908, the school was so that the higher education could be obtained at an urban secondary school here. Since 1923, the Victoria School was recognized as a secondary school.

In 1933, after a convinced National Socialist was used as a school principal with Ludwig Gerber, had to leave school a large proportion of Jewish students and teachers. To them a memorial stone in the schoolyard.

Were after the war, when almost all schools in Frankfurt destroyed or heavily damaged, were in the Victoria school temporarily to students in neighboring Wöhlerschule lessons. In 1947, the school was eventually renamed by order of the American military government towards Bettina in school. Was named after the writer Bettina von Arnim. 1961, the new building in the Feuerbachstraße was completed in Westend. Since 1 September 1967, the Bettinaschule also accepts boys.

Memorial

The construction of the memorial was the result of a project " Remembering for the Future - memorial for former Jewish classmates " of the student council of the school Bettina. For this commitment, in 2001 received the Bettinaschule the Peace Prize of the Frankfurt schools. Named as a memorial for former Jewish Viktoria students remembrance project consists of two elements, an open memorial archive at school and a monument in the schoolyard.

Offer

The focus of the school is located in the artistic area with plenty to do in art, music ( school choir ) and a Theatre or Dance AG (Dance Community ). In the 5th and 6th grade orchestra, there are classes with three hours of music instruction per week, at the intermediate level of additional music lessons are offered for interested students. Within the project Holistic afternoon the city of Frankfurt and the State of Hesse, there are numerous communities, help with homework and remedial courses where students can participate voluntarily. During the lunch break two hot meals are offered in the school café.

School newspaper Betti.Times

The student newspaper of Bettinaschule means Betti.Times. Previously published five issues of this newspaper. At the newspaper exclusively working students. She enjoys a high reputation at the school and has the student press award of the Frankfurter Sparkasse and the Frankfurter Neue Presse able to win twice (2006 and 2009). The 6th edition will be published on 20 February 2010. Cover story is the Open Day, which takes place on the same day.
