Bettyhill

Betty Hill ( gaelic On Blàran Odhar ) is a small community in northern Scotland between Thurso in the east (about 50 km) and Tongue in the West ( about 20 miles) with over 500 residents. It was founded in 1819 by Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland. She left this place at that time as a substitute for the place Rosal in Strathnaver, who had to be evacuated, building and named it after himself

The original location was vacated by sheep during the Highland Clearances because of the ever more intensive agricultural use, the inhabitants driven out. This drastic procedure was for its time quite unusual and was considered by his contemporaries controversial. In today's place, there is a tourist occupied memorial to the historical events.
