Sutherland

With an area of 5252 km ² Sutherland has only about 13,000 inhabitants ( about 2.5 inh / km ² ), making it one of the most thinly populated regions of Europe, this is partly due to the Highland Clearances in the 19th century, during which large parts of the resident population were displaced to make way for large-scale sheep farming. In various places in Sutherland memorials have been erected in memory of the displaced persons; the best known is a monument in Bettyhill. Throughout the county, there is no town.

For the county, the towns of Dornoch include ( capital of the county), Brora, Durness, Tongue, Golspie, Helmsdale, Lochinver and Kinlochbervie. 1975 Sutherland was a district of the Highland region, which was transformed into the unitary authority Highland 1996. Sutherland is still one of the Lieutenancy Areas of Scotland.

Similar Caithness Sutherland is rich in archaeological monuments, mainly burial mounds and Broch. An excellent locations close to the coast and along rivers, built on ridges or low hills, they are clearly visible. They seem to have been used over a very long period.

The area has three coasts - the northern and the western and the eastern sold them. Here there are high cliffs and sandy beaches. In the hinterland you will find treeless mountains and moorland.
