Golspie

Golspie (from Gaelic Goillspidh ) is a village in the Scottish Highland Unitary Authority. It is located about 30 km northeast of Invergordon and 65 km south-west of Wick on the north coast of the Moray Firth in the traditional county of Sutherland. In 2001, Golspie recorded 1404 inhabitants. Near Golspie are Dunrobin Castle, the seat of the Duke of Sutherland, and the Iron Age Broch Carn Liath.

History

Golspie developed in the 18th century as a fishing village. Golspie was through the connection to the railway network and the construction of the jetty attractive for tourists who wanted to visit for example the nearby Dunrobin Castle. End of the 19th century Golspie was one of the largest villages in the north of Scotland.

Traffic

With the A9 trunk road, the most important of the Scottish Highlands runs directly through Golspie. The town has its own railway station, which is serviced regularly by the Far North Line on their route from Inverness to Wick and Thurso. From the pier of Golspie once frequented by ferries.
