Inverness-shire

Inverness -shire ( schott Gael. Siorrachd Inbhir Nis ) is one of the traditional counties of Scotland. It extends across the North West of Scotland, is on the edge of the Highlands and is the largest former Scottish county. It also includes the islands of North Uist and South Uist and parts of Lewis. The historic city of Inverness is the capital of the Highlands.

History

As an administrative county Inverness -shire was 1890-1975 and then went to the District Badenoch and Strathspey, Inverness, Skye and Lochalsh and Lochaber Highland region and the Western Isles on the new administrative district. 1996, the District of the Highland region were dissolved and from all over the region, the unitary authority Highland was formed. Inverness -shire still continues as one of the Lieutenancy Areas of Scotland.

Geography

East of the city of Inverness is the battleground on which the last Scottish king shoot " Bonnie Prince Charlie" at Culloden in 1746 the battle lost against the English. A few kilometers further, near the river Nairn, are the Balnuaran of Clava, three of those round hills that gave the name Clava Cairns of the entire genus. This includes the Corrimony Cairn and Cairn of Gask. Loch Ness expands over 35 kilometers and is 1.6 km wide. It reaches in some places a depth of about 250 m. It is of course famous for its legendary monster Nessie. There are dramatic scenery and many attractions. Stories are told also to some other hole. The Great Glen acts between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, not only as a water via the Caledonian Canal, but is also a path for the birds.

To the west of Inverness -shire are North Uist and South Uist, a part of the Western Isles. The islands appear to be divided in the middle. Moore, pagans and rugged hills dominate the east, while the west is soft and is dominated by a sandy coastline and green pasture. Uist is visited as other Scottish islands not so much. The food supply depends to some extent on the ferry.
