Wigtownshire

Wigtownshire ( schott Gaelic Siorrachd Bhaile na h- Uige ) is a traditional county in the southwest of Scotland. Historical capital and the eponymous place is the town Wigtown, significant sights are Newton Stewart, Stranraer and Whithorn.

As the administrative county was Wigtownshire 1890-1975 and then formed the District of Wigtown Dumfries and Galloway region. The Dumfries and Galloway region was transformed into a unitary authority in 1996. Wigtownshire is still one of the Lieutenancy Areas of Scotland.
