Dornoch

Dornoch ( Gaelic: Dornach ) is the main town of the traditional county of Sutherland with about 1200 inhabitants ( 2004 estimate ). The village is situated on the east coast of Scotland in the Scottish Highlands at Dornoch Firth, the Dornoch Firth.

The village has the status of a Royal Burgh. It is located close to the A9, which forms part of the European route 15.

History and national heritage

The location of the cathedral was built in the 13th century under the reign of King Alexander II, but burned down in a fire in 1570 and was partly rebuilt, in a historic Victorian style in the 19th century again. Opposite the cathedral is Dornoch Castle ( Schloss Dornach ), the oldest buildings date from the 12th century and was originally the seat of the Bishops of Caithness. 1570 it was exactly like the cathedral by a feud between the clans McKay and Murray set on fire. Today it is a well known and popular hotel. In Dornoch there is a famous golf course, considered one of the oldest golf courses in the world and on the famous golf course designer Donald Ross began his career as a greenkeeper.

Special Events

Dornoch is known as the place where the last witch burning in Scotland has taken place: Janet Horne was sentenced to death in 1727. A memorial stone, the Witch's Stone, reminiscent of her death is on him, however, the year 1722 called.

On 21 December 2000 was in this cathedral Rocco, the son of pop star Madonna, baptized. Madonna married the following day Guy Ritchie at Skibo Castle nearby. The British actress Talulah Riley married on 25 September 2010 in the local cathedral the South African- American entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Economy

On January 13, 2005 Dornoch was granted the status of a Fair Trade Town of the British organization of Fair Trade seal awarded.
