Beutenberg Campus

The Beutenberg Campus is a location for science and research in Jena, which is located in the south of the city. In 1950, the physician Hans Knoell founded on Beutenberg the first biomedical research facility which was conducted from 1970 as the Central Institute of Microbiology and Experimental Therapy ( ZIMET ) of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1982 also the first physically oriented institute was located at Beutenberg. After the political change came on the recommendation of the Science Council, an interdisciplinary science center.

On campus, nine institutes of the Leibniz Association, the Max Planck and Fraunhofer -Gesellschaft and the state of Thuringia and the Friedrich Schiller University are located ( a list of the facilities available below). Two business incubators, technology and Innovation Park Jena and the BioInstrumentation Centre, home to more than 50 companies. In addition, Wacker Biotech GmbH has settled at this location with the production of biotechnological products.

The Beutenberg campus offers an inter -disciplinary knowledge and technology platform for processing of innovative research fields. Under the motto Life Science meets Physics is a center of excellence for research and development has been established in the complementary areas of biology, ( natural- ) chemistry, environmental science and medicine with the physics of optics, photonics and optical microsystems ideal.

Overall, more than 2,300 employees, including more than 1,000 scientists on campus, busy. On the Beutenberg numerous domestic and foreign doctoral students in seven international graduate schools are trained in close cooperation with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena beyond. The annual budget for research is 130 million euros and 88 million euros by the industry for the year 2013. Between 1991 and 2013, invested by the Free State of Thuringia, Federal Government and the EU more than half a billion euros in the expansion of infrastructure.

The nonprofit organization provides a platform to strengthen cooperation for a coordinated external presentation and the development of common and innovative strategies for creating synergistic added value. Thus, the association gives the scientific prizes for life sciences and physics at young scientists, for example, annually. He regularly organizes public lectures by eminent scientists ( " Noble Talks" ), the public gives a comprehensive picture of its commonly understood scientific and technical activities and represents the interests of its members to policy makers.
