Biberkopf

Seen beaver head from the northwest, near the Mindelheimer hut,

The beaver head is a 2,599 meter high mountain in the Alps on the border between Germany and Austria.

Location

It is located in the main ridge of the Allgäu Alps on the border between Bavaria and Tyrol and of the district Oberallgaeu the district of Reutte. There he is located approximately 15.5 kilometers south- southwest of Oberstdorf and only about 2.5 kilometers east of the Schrofenpasses (as the crow flies).

The beaver head is sometimes referred to as the southernmost point of Bavaria and Germany, although the summit 110 meters further north than the 4,088 meters to the west ( straight line ) located Haldenwanger Eck is.

Geology

Due to its fascinating design, he is one of the most impressive mountains in the German Alps. Geologically, the summit established body of intensively folded dolomite, which was postponed on marls. The very pure dolomite poverty of vegetation of the mountain, there is enough soil formation, the content of clay minerals in the weathering product of the rock is too low due. In contrast, after the transition to the marl layers a rich flora can be found.

Ascent

From the Rappenseehütte and Lechleiten at Warth waymarked routes lead to the beaver head. The time required is about 2.5 or 3 hours. Both ascent routes traverse exposed, steep rocks and debris games, so slip resistance is required. Due to the installation of wire ropes and climbing aids, however, the rise is possible ( Difficulty UIAA I) for less climbing skilful people. When wet, snow or smoothness is inadvisable from a climb. North side, often keeping the snow all year round residues.

The first ascent of the beaver head south wall succeeded in 1922 the Allgäu mountain climbers Hermann Grosselfinger.

Summit cross

The summit cross was ' local group Oberguenzburg ' the, built in 1959 by the ' DAV- section Allgäu / Kempten ', which is also subject to receipt of the way up the mountain in wood.
