History

On the banks of the stream were numerous mills, alone in Bieber there were five. In the Middle Ages Bieber led far more water than today, so fishing was possible. It flowed through the Mark Bieber, and only Märker allowed to fish in it. In the 20th century, the water quality deteriorated sharply since the places ushered their effluent into the Bieber on stream. Water quality was further improved by the construction of sewage treatment plants. The Bieber is locally channeled and piped in the district of Offenbach Bieber since 1963. On August 9, 1981, came as a result of heavy rainfall, particularly in the catchment area of the stream Bieber to severe flooding in the town center of Bieber. As of 2007, extensive restoration measures in the Bieberer and Mühlheimer district were started ( see below).

The creek is probably the namesake of today's Offenbach district Bieber and indirectly for the Bieberer Mountain, a stadium and the historic Bieber marrow. The previous spellings of the name as Bieberau and Bieberaha suggest, because the word endings - and aha -au mean in the old Germanic languages as much as water. The name itself is probably of Celtic origin and is probably related to the animal beaver ( celtic: Bevere ), although this is not proven in historical times by the stream. The medieval become desolate place Rennigishausen was located on the banks of Bieber. The associated mill is excavated archaeologically since April 2009.

The Father houses courtyard with Heusenstamm and upper mill and Käsmühle at Offenbach- Bieber (part of the Hessian apple wine and orchard route ), all located on the banks of the stream, are popular destinations in the region.

Natural space

The Bachaue is an important cold air producing area for the county-level city of Offenbach am Main. Between the Offenbach city forest ( run section of Heusenstamm to Bieber ) and the Mühlheimer flowing through forest of Bach almost only open meadows and farmland. The valley area is protected as a nature reserve, the only building of the eponymous town Bieber interrupts.

The Bieber flows at about 600 meters in length the nature reserve Erlenstegenstraße of Bieber ( east of the river course partly in Bieberer forest located ) with orchid meadows. Here and in the north adjoining the conservation area Bieberbach South, until the entrance of the town Bieber, the water flow of the stream is enhanced by near-surface seepage and the confluence of several drainage ditches from the neighboring forest.

The Bieber flows in the conservation area Bieberbach South ecologically valuable area with wet and moist meadows. Here live many species of birds, including some endangered. Of fish species occur in the loach and gudgeon Bieber. On the banks of the now re- clear stream species-rich hay meadows are next to dark swamp forests habitat for many animal and plant species. Among the bird species include hawk and quail.

In the neighborhood of Bieber is located at Heusenstamm the nature reserve Nachtweide of Patershausen. The ecological status of surface waters is in the range Dietz Bach's well within the range Heusenstamms unsatisfactory and in the field Bieber on the south side of the village moderately, on the north side to the mouth of the Rodau good "( as of 2007). The Hessian State Office for Environment and Geology in Wiesbaden ranks Bieber together with the Rodau to the " most polluted waters in Hesse ." So the brook leads an extremely high proportion of treated water. the water quality class would correspond to stage III to IV ( very dirty ). it 'm less concerned the actual quality of the water, but the ratio of natural stream water to clarified water. the state Office therefore recommends not to bathe in the stream. crustaceans or small snails in the Bieber only in small numbers and also diatoms will not find any favorable living conditions.

Restoration measures

On Mühlheimer district should be available from November 2007 to begin the restoration measures. Between Käsmühle and elm street in the residential area Markwald the city wants to buy up land and future use as a retention area. At high tide, this site could serve as a flooding surface. For this purpose, are funding the EU in the amount of 51,900 euros.

Between Elm Street and mouth of Bieber in the Rodau that valley shall be reconnected to the floodplain in the area. In addition, sand and gravel banks are created and tributaries and still water zones are established. Channeling at this point would thus be reversed. Here again are the EU funding available ( 397 340 EUR ).

Also on Bieberer district, on the section between Bieber and Käsmühle, began in 2007 extensive restoration measures. Thus, the continuous meadows of Bieber is to be restored to the mouth and are maintained in the future of farmers. Actually, the work should start in spring 2007, but were postponed to fall 2007 due to improper weather.

On the Heusenstammer urban area restoration measures are also planned. First, the northern part of the creek between Woogbrücke and city boundary is to be rehabilitated. The plan is to promote, by anchoring of dead wood in the stream the formation of loops and loops. Also, by attachment of fine gravel this meandering is to be supported. By resting stones in concrete and fast-flowing area you would like to support the migration of fish, since upward pulling fish can rest in the slow flowing water behind these stones. With the planting of alder and oak trees, a riparian forest vegetation is to be created. The work in Heusenstamm could start in autumn 2009, when there are up to that all permits. The internal portion of the city Heusenstamm for these measures is around 60,000 euros.

The south of the city Heusenstamm situated part of the stream should also be renatured. Earlier, the city Heusenstamm about the details with the City Dietzenbach must agree.
