Biel/Bienne–Magglingen/Macolin funicular

The inaugurated in 1887 Biel- Magglingen Railway is a funicular railway in Switzerland and connects Biel / Bienne with Magglingen. The difference in height of the rail system is 442 m, the track is 1693 meters long.

The railway was built in 1887 by Pümpin, Herzog & Cie., Berne and operated until 1923 as a water ballast train. 1923, the cars were replaced by rolling and by the water ballast per vehicle of 3.5 tonnes to 4.5 tonnes. In 1954, the plant was also rebuilt by of rolling to electrical operation, the brake system Riggenbach rack was removed and the cars were again renewed. 2001, the system was brought up to date by Doppelmayr.

The track was built at the beginning as dreischienige layout with center passing loop. In addition to the brakes a Riggenbach rack was installed. During the renovation in 1954, the plant was converted to a two bar layout with center Ausweiche without rack. Immediately after the valley station followed by a 90 -meter-long bridge.

In 2000, the railway has merged with the Biel- Leubringen train to FUNIC.
