Big Brother and the Holding Company

Big Brother and the Holding Company is an American band that was founded in 1965 within the music scene of San Francisco. The best known member was Janis Joplin.

Band History

James Gurley replaced in November 1965 Dave Eskerson because this was still too young by the American Youth Policy, to play in bars. Furthermore, it was replaced by David Getz on drums in February 1966 Chuck Jones. The cast from February 1966 to June 1966 was Sam Andrew ( gtr / voc ), Peter Albin (bs / voc), James Gurley ( gtr ) † 20 December 2009 David Getz (dr ), Ed Bogas ( vio ). With the appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 with the " front woman " Janis Joplin, the band became world famous.

In 1967, the band released their first album also Big Brother & The Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin when mainstream label of Bob Shad. In April 1968, she then got a contract with Columbia Records. There appeared in the same year then the second LP " Cheap Thrills " (front cover by Robert Crumb ). Then Janis Joplin decided to pursue a solo career and left the band. For them, a new backing band was assembled, in which they took the guitarist Sam Andrew of Big Brother is the only member. Sam Andrew left in late summer 1969, the Kozmic Blues Band. From August 1969 to February 1972 the band by the return of Sam Andrew and the addition of Nick Gravenites ( Electric Flag ) of past successful times tried to tie. Since the departure of Lisa Battle, the band collaborated with various singers. Main partners were from 2000 to 2002 Lisa Mills and since then Kacee Clanton. Furthermore, Wendy Rich, Andra Mitrovich and Sophia Ramos appeared with Big Brother. Tom Finch was represented in some European tours since 2002 by the guitarist Chad Quist from Seattle.
