The reputation of the founder and the success of the games in which they had participated, made it easy for them to find a large publisher who supported the development financially: The software company Microsoft acquired with an exclusive contract all publishing and distribution rights to the titles of BHG. Microsoft funded the development of the first title with several million dollars. In addition, Big Huge Games was awarded the program code for Age of Empires II Microsoft for free use.

The first published title of the new company, the strategy game Rise of Nations, published in May 2003. It received excellent ratings and numerous awards ( including seven "Game of the Year" Awards), and the sales figures could convince. In April 2004, the first add -on, Thrones and Patriots followed. Together, the main program and expansion sold until October 2004, when the gold edition appeared with both programs, about a million times.

The sequel Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, which unlike its predecessor, however, no historical events re-enacted, but is located in a fantasy steampunk world, exist in both vapor- based technology and magic, was published in May 2006. However, although the development budget and the development team has been increased in comparison to Rise of Nations and the title received high critical acclaim, sold Publisher Microsoft only about a third of what could be deducted from Rise of Nations.
