The Big Muddy River flows through the south of the U.S. state of Illinois. It rises near Kell in Marion County and flows after 267 km below Murphysboro in Jackson County in the Mississippi River.
The Big Muddy River not far from Benton is dammed up to the edge of Lake.
The name Big Muddy River (literally " Great mud river " ) refers to the muddy ground on the largest part of its course.
The river is not to be confused with the Missouri River, which is often popularly called Big Muddy.
