Bill White (Texas politician)

William Howard "Bill" White ( born June 16, 1954 in San Antonio, Texas) is an American politician. He was from January 2004 to January 2010 Mayor of Houston.

White studied law at the University of Texas at Austin and worked in the law firm of Susman Godfrey LLP, where he later became partners later. After 14 years of working in this firm White in 1993 Deputy Energy Minister ( Deputy Secretary of Energy) in the Clinton administration. Two years later he resigned to go into private business. During this time, White has also held the post of chairman of the Democratic Party in Texas.

After Lee P. Brown was not allowed to compete in the elections for mayor in 2003 (he had already completed three terms ), White ran as a moderate Democrat for election and was able to prevail against the Republican Orlando Sanchez. 2005 White was re-elected with 91%. 2007 was his re-election. With the expiration of his third term, he resigned from the office. When his successor in 2009 Annise Parker was elected in December.

White competed in November 2010 at the office of governor of Texas. However, he was defeated by Republican incumbent Rick Perry clearly with 42:55 percent of the vote. Speculation that he would apply for the 2012 seat no longer candidates win Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison in the U.S. Senate, White has already rejected.
