Binondo Church

The Binondo Church ( officially: " Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz " ) is one of four Basilicae minores of the Archdiocese of Manila, the Roman Catholic Church in the capital of the Philippines Manila. It is in Barangay Binondo, on the Ongpin Street, and marks the entrance to Chinatown Manila.

The church is dedicated to Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino who is revered as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. The fairs are celebrated in Filipino, Mandarin and English.

History

Binondo is the old market square where settled in the Middle Ages Chinese to trade with the inhabitants Maynilads. After the Spanish colonization of Manila, many of them converted to Christianity. Since at this time mixed services were banned, the Chinese population in 1596 received their own time, led by priests of the Dominican Order Church, today's Binondo Church.

It survived the great earthquake of the 17th century until it was during the British invasion of the Philippines in 1762, a short chapter of the Seven Years' War, destroyed. 1852 rebuilt and completed, it survived the great earthquake of 1863 and 1880 almost unscathed until it was destroyed in 1944 by the U.S. Air Force during the bombardment of Manila. There remained only the western facade and bell tower are. My reconstruction took place in the 1950s, but was only completed in 1984.

During the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1992, she was awarded the status of a minor Basilica.
