The Hesperides (A 33), is a Spanish polar research vessel.

The ship is operated by the Spanish Navy. For the use of the ship the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (MEC ) is responsible.

History

The ship was laid in 1988 on the Bazán shipyard in Cartagena on Kiel. The launching of the ship took place on 12 March 1990.

The ship was put into service in 1991.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is propelled by two electric motors with an output of 1400 kW, acting on two fixed-pitch propellers. In addition, the ship is equipped with rear and bow thruster.

The power is supplied by four diesel generators, two of which have a capacity of 1300 kW and two of which are output of 750 kW. In addition, an emergency generator is on board.

The ship has a helicopter platform. It has a range of 12,000 nautical miles.

The vessel is classed by Lloyd 's Register of Shipping. It has ice class 1C and can by up to 0.5 m thick ice driving at 5 knots.

Use

The Hesperides is used primarily for research in the Atlantic and the Antarctic.
