Bira, Russia

Bira (Russian Бира ) is an urban-type settlement in Russia. It is in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast on the eponymous river and has 3167 inhabitants ( October 14, 2010 ).

History

Today's settlement was founded in 1908 on the Amur tributary Bira, who also gave it its name. The river name itself is taken from the language of one in this area once settled Evenk tribe and means as much as "big water ". The founder and the first settlers Biras operated there in the beginning of the 20th century, especially logging and hunting. 1911, near Bira railway station.

Once the location in the Russian Civil War was fought over the beginning of the 1920s, it was removed in the 1930's on, so there was a sawmill among others. In 1936, Bira was the center of a Rajons in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast.

In addition to the wood processing are available in Bira today a railway workshop.
