Birendranagar ( Nepali: वीरेन्द्नगर Birendranagar, often referred to as Surkhet ) is a city in western Nepal and the administrative seat of the district of Surkhet in the Bheri Zone. The city is situated on the northern edge of the Surkhettales at an altitude of 688 m. In 2011 it had 47 914 inhabitants.

The valley, about 9 km long and 6 km wide, is separated from the Terai by up to 1,500 m high hills. Birendranagar is scheduled emerged as the administrative center and after its founder, King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev ( वीरेन्द्र वीर विक्रम शाह ) (1945 - 2001) named.

Up in the center of the valley, about 3 km south of Birendranagar there is a small, 70 to 80 m high wooded hill with the ruins of the Buddhist temple Kakrebihar, which probably originated in the 12th century.
