Birkholm

Birkholm is a Danish island south of Funen.

It lies between Ærø and Taasinge, is about 0.92 km ² with 11 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) after Hjortø the second smallest inhabited island in Denmark. The highest point of the island is 1.8 m above sea level. It comes with the mail boat Marstal Ærø on the island. Birkholm belonged until 1970 to the parish Marstal ( Marstal Sogn in the Harde Ærø Herred in the former Svendborg Office). Then it belonged to Marstal municipality in the former County of Funen, which has risen from 1 January 2006, ie one year before the municipal reform on 1 January 2007 in Ærø municipality, now part of the Region Syddanmark.

Birkholm belongs to the Association of Danish Small Islands " Danske Småøerne ".

Dikes

On the island there are two dike rings that are designed to protect the island from flooding. The outer ring dike is about 1.8 meters high and includes many pastures with a. The inner ring dike is about 2.8 meters high and only surrounds the village.

Port

The port in Birkholm has promoted a dock for the mail boat, the post office, people and goods. In addition, the port keeps ready berths for boats of islanders and around 10 Sportbootliegepläze. During the summer, but much more pleasure boats squeeze partially into the harbor. The harbor has a depth of about 1.8 meters. There is electricity but no fresh water in the harbor. Retail
