The Annattogewächse ( Bixaceae ), also called Orleans tree plants, are a small plant family in the order of Malvenartigen ( Malvales ). This family now includes four genera. The most familiar type is the Annattostrauch ( Bixa orellana ). The family has a pantropical distribution.
Description
There are usually woody or rarely herbaceous plants. They contain a yellow or red latex. The alternate, arranged spirally, simple leaves are long-petiolate and have a smooth or toothed margin. Stipules are present.
The large, five petals are radial symmetry zygomorph up more or less. The five free petals are usually yellow. There are usually many (50 to 150) free, fertile stamens present. Two to five carpels are a superior ovaries fused with a stylus and a scar. They form seed capsules. The seeds contain starch.
System
This family contains today after molekularphylogenetischen dendrograms, the two genera of the family of the former Cochlospermaceae Planch. and the only species of the family of the former Diegodendraceae Capuron.
This family contains four genera with about 21 species:
- Amoreuxia Moc. & Sessé ex DC. With four ways: Amoreuxia gonzalezii Sprague & L.Riley; it occurs in Arizona and Mexico
- Amoreuxia malvifolia A. Gray; occurs in Mexico (Chihuahua, Durango )
- Amoreuxia palmatifida Moc. & Sessé ex DC. ; it occurs in the southern U.S., Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua
- Amoreuxia wrightii Gray; comes in the southwestern United States before and is almost extinct
- Bixa arborea Huber
- Bixa excelsa Gleason & Krukoff
- Called Annatostrauch, also Orleans Tree ( annatto, achiote ), ( Bixa orellana L.)
- Bixa platycarpa Ruiz & Pav ex G.Don
- Bixa urucurana Willd.; the species occurs in Central and South America.
- Diegodendron humbertii Capuron: It occurs only in Madagascar.
