The safety pin dress (English: safety pin dress or even "That Dress" ) is an evening dress that was created by the fashion designer Gianni Versace. It is an icon of fashion history in the 20th century. The dress was worn by actress Liz Hurley in 1994 at the film premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Hurley along with her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant, the lead actor of the film, attended.

Design

The long, slim fitting black evening dress with wide, deep herabreichendem sweetheart front neckline and slim double straps is side slit from the waist down and from the waist to below the armpits, or cut. On this side cutouts the dress is held together by a series of seven large gold safety pins, in particular the slot on the upper body as far jumps that safety pins are firmly against the skin and form a support structure for the dress. In addition to the safety pins with " supporting function" decorate more gold-colored safety pins on straps and corset dress. The safety needles used are reminiscent of the needles with which traditional Scottish kilts are held together. A viscose - acetate mixture ( and not, as sometimes listed silk) for the dress used from his Spring / Summer collection of 1994 Versace. The inspiration for the dress to come from the punk.

Liz Hurley, then 29 years old, combined the simple despite the sensational cut dress with a black clutch and black slingbacks, and a matching gold jewelry for the movie premiere.

Importance

The dress is one of the most famous Versace creations and marks the onset of the global media awareness of Liz Hurley. It was long-lasting attention in the media world. Hurley's appearance was chosen in a poll of British department store chain Debenhams among 3,000 women at # 1 on the Top 20 Iconic Red Carpet Dresses. The dress was at the peak of Gianni Versace's career as a fashion designer, only three years before his assassination. Coinciding with Liz Hurley appearance dedicated the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts Versace own exhibition.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London put the dress in the fall of 2003 as part of a Versace retrospective. The dress was placed prominently at the entrance of the exhibition.

In 2007, a copy of the safety pin dress at a price of £ 10.690 in London's Harrods department store was offered. The dress was part of an exhibition on the " little black dress " in the London department store branch.

Reception

Versace's safety-pin dress has since inspired designers in the creation of robes for appearances on the red carpet. Thus, the hotel chain heiress Paris Hilton appeared in 2009 in short black dress, the full skirt was fastened at the waist with safety pins on the upper part, the LA premiere of Michael Jackson's This Is It, the actress Anna Paquin wore a similar but slim fitting model to the LA premiere of Scream 4 in 2011.

Even after Versace's death, the fashion label keeps going back to the safety pin dress as inspiration. For example, based the collection of secondary line Versus in 2009, almost exclusively on references of the dress - be it with safety pins as an accessory or with recesses and slots.

In 2012, the singer Lady Gaga was initially also a modified version with safety pins at the waist and along a slotted short skirt. Shortly thereafter, however she also wore the original dress at a meeting with the designer Donatella Versace in Milan. It was on loan from the Versace archive and should be the same dress that Liz Hurley had almost 20 years earlier worn. Lady Gaga had more historic Versace dresses recently worn in a video.
