Blackness (Falkirk)

Blackness is the easternmost town in the Scottish unitary authority Falkirk. It is located near the border with West Lothian in the traditional county of Linlithgowshire on the banks of the Firth of Forth. The creek Blackness Burn flows through the village and flows into the Firth of Forth. Falkirk is located 16 km west, while Edinburgh is located about 22 km east of Blackness. The village is connected via a side street off the A904 to the road network.

History

Blackness emerged with the Castle Blackness Castle, which was built around 1440 and several times had an important role in Scottish history. It developed as a port of the inland cities and town of Linlithgow, a commercial center of the region. With the relocation of the port according to Bo'ness in 1680, sank the economic importance of Blackness. As a result, fell the port facilities and farms and craftsmen migrated.

Today will not get any more historic building in Blackness. The village derives mainly from the 19th century and a settlement of the public housing is of a later date. In 2001, Blackness recorded 135 inhabitants. This represents a decrease compared to 182 residents counted in 1971.
