The Blautopf in Beuren, origin of the blue
The blue is a 14.5 km long left tributary of the Danube in the east of Baden- Württemberg ( Germany ).
It rises in Blaubeuren (Alb -Donau-Kreis ) on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb. There you water flows out of the blue pot into Blautal east across Blaustein to Ulm, where the blue flows into the Danube.

Name
The name Blue not came from the color of the water, he is rather a river name from vorgermanischer time ( IE - oped. Blava ), as is the case in other tributaries of the Danube, about for Nau, Drava and Sow ( Save).

Blue pot
The blue springs from the Blautopf in Beuren, the karst spring with the second highest bed ( 2.300 l / s) in Germany. The source Blaubeuren monastery forms the outflow of the blue cave.
Blautal
From its source in the blue pot the blue flows past in an easterly direction to the main Blaubeuren, Gerhausen, Arnegg, Mr. Lingen, bluestone and the Ulm district Söflingen. In Blaubeuren opens, a few hundred meters below the blue pot, coming from the right Ah, already has a flow distance of about 10 km behind. Mouth
In Ulm, it flows to the former factory premises of commercial vehicle manufacturers Magirus-Deutz and Kässbohrer over. Urdonautal
The Valley of the Blue was formed by the ancient Danube. When the Swabian Alb raised during the folding of the Alps, the ancient Danube ate first ever deeper into the rock until she finally sought a bed on the south. Sport climbing area
The Blautal offers good sport climbing and one of the most interesting climbing areas of the Swabian Alb. Routes are set up in almost all levels of difficulty. Water
The blue is a charming canoeing waters. It is from the mouth of a continuation of Ach. From Blaubeuren to Klingenstein is annually March 1 to June 30 Befahrung a limitation for individual drivers, exemptions may be granted by the conservation authority in Ulm.
