Blossom Dearie

Marguerite Blossom Dearie ( born April 28, 1924 in East Durham, New York, † February 7, 2009 in Greenwich Village, New York City ) was an American jazz singer and pianist.

Life and work

As a child, she first learned the classical piano - playing, and turned as adolescents to jazz. After graduating from high school Dearie moved to New York City, where she found her musical home and despite several visits abroad their preferred city remained.

In the 1940s, she sang first in several jazz bands (such as the Blue Flames and the Blue Reys ) before she began her solo career. In 1952 she moved to Paris, where he founded the band Blue Stars, with whom she recorded songs in English and French and from which later emerged the Swingle Singers. 1954 she succeeded with a French interpretation of the song " Lullaby of Birdland" in France a hit. In 1956 she returned to the U.S. and received a recording contract with Verve Records. Among others, she recorded an album of songs by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

Produced numerous jazz albums in the 50s and 60s, partly together with her early late husband, flutist Bobby Jaspar and tenor. Typical of her music was her high, girlish voice, a style they used consistently. In 1964 she took her most well- known album May I come in on. In addition to their studio productions she appeared regularly in New York nightclubs. 1966 was followed by appearances at the London club Ronnie Scott, and several times on television.

In the 70 years, the popularity of Dearie subsided. To counteract that, she founded her label Daffodil, on which they continued to produce albums up in the 80s or compilations hung in 1974. In addition, they still came in variety shows in New York, since 2003, for example, regularly in Danny's Skylight Room, until it closed its doors in 2006.
