This is called a vCard, which normally (eg for Blue Dating Chat or Blue ) contains a message in the name field, sent to another Bluetooth-enabled device via the OBEX protocol.

Bluetooth, however, has a very limited range, usually up to 10 meters with mobile phones, laptops can achieve a range of up to 200 meters with powerful Class 1 - transmitters.

Origin of Bluejacking

Bluejacking was first performed by a Malaysian IT consultant who made use of its mobile phone to advertise for Sony Ericsson. He even invented the name, a combination of the words and Bluetooth ajack, his username at Esato, an online forum of Sony Ericsson fans.

However, the term could also be composed of Bluetooth and hijacking.

Use

Bluejacking is usually harmless, but as people who are gebluejacked, generally do not know what 's going on, they could possibly think that their phone is malfunctioning. Usually a Blue Jacker will only send a text message, but with modern mobile phones, it is also possible to send images and sounds. Bluejacking has been used in guerrilla marketing campaigns to advertise Advertgames. With the increase in availability of Bluetooth-enabled devices they were also vulnerable to virus attacks and even for complete takeovers by Trojan horses.
