Bobby Shew

Bobby Shew ( born March 4, 1941 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) is a trumpeter and flugelhorn player of modern jazz.

Life and work

With 8 years Shew began playing the guitar; he switched to the trumpet at age 10 and has already played at the age of 13 years in local dance bands. At 15, he formed his own band, with which he appeared during his high school years. Subsequently, he did his military service in the NORAD band from solo to the jazz trumpet. He then joined the Orchestra of Tommy Dorsey, then played on the initiative of Bill Chase in the Woody Herman band, before moving to Della Reese and Buddy Rich, where he matured into an excellent lead trumpet. Shew is one of the few lead trumpet, which are also excellent soloists. He also worked as a studio musician and in Las Vegas. In 1972 he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked with Art Pepper, Bud Shank, the quintet of Horace Silver, the combo of Frank Strazzeri - Sam Most, but also in the studios and the big bands of Bill Holman, Louie Bellson, Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin ( Insights, 1976), Oliver Nelson, Bill Berry, Nat Pierce, the Juggernaut Orchestra by Frank Capp, Ed Shaughnessy, Terry Gibbs, Benny Goodman, Maynard Ferguson, Neal Hefti, Don Menza, and Bob Florence worked.

Shew has also worked as a music teacher and leads international clinics and master classes by; among other things, he taught Till Bronner. He was on the board of the International Trumpet Guild and the International Association of Jazz Educators. In addition, he worked for Yamaha in the instrument development of the Z- line.
