Bob Florence

Robert C. " Bob " Florence ( born May 20, 1932 in Los Angeles, † May 15, 2008 ) was an American jazz pianist, arranger and bandleader of modern jazz.

Life and work

Florence studied piano at the LA City College and received lessons in composition with Wesley LaViolette. Early in his career, he was pianist and arranger Dave Pell; then he played with Harry James, Les Brown, Jerry Fielding and the Sauter - Finegan Orchestra, so I can work with Si Zentner. Since the 1950s he also worked as an arranger for Harry James, Louie Bellson, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Doc Severinsen and the hr-Bigband.

In the late 1950s he formed his first band in which, inter alia, Herb Geller, Bud Shank, Frank Capp and Bob Enevoldsen participated. Since that time, Florence worked in the Los Angeles big band projects, mainly with session musicians and as a companion of singers. Since 1979, he led a band rehearsal in Los Angeles, which was occupied with original six saxophones. In the 1970s he took albums for the label Discovery on in the 1990s for Mama Records.

Prizes and awards

In 2000 he won the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. In 2001, he studied with the SWR Big Band a own compositions and arrangements, which were published under the title "Golden Milestone " and was nominated for a Grammy.
