Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu

Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu ( born February 26, 1838 in Kerstentsi, Chernivtsi Oblast; † 25 August 1907 in Campina ) was a Romanian politician, writer, historian, linguist, and ethnologist Rumänist.

Life and work

Tadeu Hasdeu was the son of the writer Alexandru Hâjdeu ( 1811-1872 ). In 1857 he took the name Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu. He studied law in Kharkov and fought as a Russian hussar in the Crimean War. As a high school teacher and bookseller he lived from 1858 in Iaşi, 1863 in Bucharest.

Hasdeu pursued long-span research interests in Romanian history and philology, became involved in politics and was active as a writer. In 1876 he was archivist, 1878 Professor of Comparative Linguistics at the University of Bucharest.

The early death of his gifted daughter Iulia Hasdeu (1869-1888) drove him into the arms of spiritualism. To their memory he was in Campina with the " Castelul Iulia Hasdeu " build a castle in which a Hasdeu Museum was established.

In 1877 he was elected to the Romanian Academy, an award named after him later. In Moldova, the University Universitatea de Stat Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu Founded in 1999, is named after him in Cahul, and also the town library Chisinau. In Iaşi and Buzău schools bear his name.
