Bolama Region

Bolama / Bijagos is an administrative region in Guinea- Bissau. It includes the off-shore islands of the archipelago Bissagos, as well as the south-east which are situated further small João Vieira archipelago, which is geographically not expected to Bissagos Islands. Its main town, Bolama on the same coast closest island of the archipelago.

According to official estimates, the region had 33 929 inhabitants in 2009. Among the 88 islands in the archipelago are 19 inhabited. The most populous islands are Bolama, Caravela and Bubaque. The inhabitants belong to the ethnic group of the Bissagos who speak the language Bijago from the language family of the Atlantic languages.

Administrative divisions

The region is divided into four sectors

  • Bolama, with the main islands and Bolama Galinhas in northeastern
  • Bubaque, with the main islands Bubaque, Orangozinho, Meneque, Soga, Rubane ( uninhabited ), Roxa and João Vieira ( uninhabited, geographically not part of the Bissago Archipelago ), in the south
  • Caravela, with the main islands Caravela, Carache, Unhacomo, Unhocomozinho, Enu ( uninhabited ), Formosa, Ponta and Maio, in the northwest.
  • Uno, with the main islands Uno and Uracane (formerly the sector Caravela ), and Canogo and Orango (formerly the Bubaque sector).

1) The sector Uno was spun off from Caravela 2004. In addition, the western islands of the sector Bubaque were added to the new sector. The sub-areas according to the spin-off are estimated proportionally.
