Bolkhov

Bolkhov (Russian Болхов ) is a Russian city in the Oryol Oblast, Central Russia federal district. It is the administrative seat of the homonymous Rajons and has 11,421 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geographical location

The town lies at the mouth of the river Bolchowka in the Nugr, a tributary of the Oka, approximately 60 km north of Orel and about 270 km south-west of Moscow.

History

Bolkhov - the name derives from the personal name Bolch - has been known since the 12th century and served in the 16th century as a fortress on the southern border of Muscovy. On 29 Apriljul. / 9 Maigreg. and 30 Apriljul. / May 10 1608greg. took place near the village of a battle between the Russian armies under the leadership of Prince Dmitry Ivanovich Schuiski and the Polish army under False Dmitry II, which ended with the victory of Poland and the " False Dmitry " paved the way to Moscow. 1778 settlement with city rights was provided and developed by the end of the 19th century commercial center with major leather goods industry.

Economy and Transport

Today, the dominant industries include food production, furniture and semiconductor fabrication and Nutzhanfverarbeitung. Bolkhov lies on the major highway R -92 of Oryol to Kaluga.

Attractions

In the historical center ( Спасо - Преображенский собор / Spaso- Preobrazhensky Sobor, 1841-1851 ), in addition to the imposing Christ 's Transfiguration Church, Trinity Church ( Троицкая церковь / Troitskaya Tserkov, 1708) and St. George's Church ( Георгиевская церковь / Georgiewskaja Tserkov ) is important. Outside the city, near the village of Verkhnyaya Monastyrskaja is founded in the 14th or 15th century Optin Monastery ( Оптин монастырь / Optin monastyr ), which however has been severely damaged in the 1930s.
