Maloarkhangelsk, Oryol Oblast

Maloarchangelsk (Russian Малоархангельск ) is a small town in Oryol Oblast (Russia) with 3620 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies about 80 km south of Oblasthauptstadt Oryol on the river Bely in the river system of Bystraja Sosna, a right tributary of the Don.

Maloarchangelsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The village was founded in the 17th century Archangelskoje (of Russian Archangel for Archangel, after the name of the village church ) received in 1778 the municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) the governorship of Oryol under the name Maly Archangelski gorodok ( Small Archangel town, to distinguish it from at this time most Archangelski gorodok called Arkhangelsk ).

In the reorganization of the provinces in 1796 the city lost its city charter briefly in 1802 but it has been renewed. Over time, the town name was simplified to the present form.

During World War II Maloarchangelsk was occupied on 11 November 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 23 February 1943 by troops of the Bryansk Front Red Army. In the area west of Maloarchangelsk the Soviet counter-offensive took the northern part of the so-called Kursk salient in the summer of 1943 their output.

Economy

In Maloarchangelsk as the center of an agricultural area, there is next to a small engineering company only companies in the food industry.

The main train station is 14 kilometers west of the railway line Moscow - Orel - Kursk - Kharkov ( kilometer 460).
