Oryol Governorate

The government of Orel (Russian Орловская губерния / Orlowskaja Gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire. The area was 46 724 km2.

It was from 1796 to 1928, capital was Oryol.

Location

The government of Orel bordered on the following provinces (from north clockwise): Kaluga, Tula, Tambov, Voronezh, Kursk, Chernigov and Smolensk.

In 1897, the province had 2,033,798 inhabitants, apart from smaller groups Jews, German and Poland almost exclusively Russian.

The harvest was in 1902: 33 194 tonnes of wheat, 598 872 tonnes of rye, 402 636 tonnes of oats, 44,280 tons of buckwheat, 4723 tonnes of barley, 960 089 5346 tonnes of peas and tons of potatoes. Very important was the cultivation of hemp (1902: 29 302 tonnes and 62 910 tonnes of seed fiber ) wherein the government in Russia was in the first place. Also, tobacco and some beet were built. In cattle, there were 448,000 horses, 296,000 head of cattle, 955,000 sheep and 174,000 pigs. Horse breeding was maintained in the great state ( Orlov ) and numerous private studs. The industry employed 1900: 43.395 workers in 8889 commercial systems, but their production evaluated only about 30 million rubles. The majority of the plants were small enterprises for the processing and preparation of hemp and rope manufacture. Larger farms existed in the milling industry, the leather industry and sugar production. In Bryansk there was a machine and locomotive factory.
