Chernigov Governorate

The province Chernihiv (Russian Черниговская губерния / Tschernigowskaja Gubernija, Ukrainian Чернігівська губернія / Tschernihiwska hubernija ) was one of 1802 to 1919 existing management unit ( Gubernija / губерния ) of the Russian Empire. Capital of the province with a population of 2.298 million (1897 ) was the city of Chernigov ( Chernihiv Ukr ) in Ukraine.

Geography

The government was in the territory of the left-bank Ukraine to the north of present-day Ukraine and southern Russia and had an area of ​​52,396 km ².

It bordered on the following provinces (from north clockwise): Smolensk province, province of Orel, Kursk, Poltava Governorate, Kiev Governorate, Minsk province, province Mohilew.

In 1897, the government had 2.298 million inhabitants. Of these, 1,525,000 ( 66.4 %) Little Russians ( Ukrainians ). The population density was 44 people per km ².
