Tambov Governorate

The government of Tambov ( Russian губерния Тамбовская, Tambowskaja Gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire, located in the southeastern center of European Russia. It bordered ( clockwise from north ) to the following provinces: Vladimir, Nizhny Novgorod, Penza, Saratov, Voronezh, Orel, Tula and Ryazan.

It had an area of ​​66,588 km ², capital was Tambov.

It was founded in 1779 as the governorship in 1796 and converted into a province. 1920/21 it was a center of the uprising of Tambov, where the central government over much of the area had for some months no control. 1928 was divided into several districts in the Central Chernozem Oblast.

According to the results of the 1897 census, the province had 2,684,030 inhabitants. Of these, 2,562,677 Russians, 89 704 and 16 976 Mordvins Tatars. There were also smaller groups of Ukrainians, Belarusians, Jews and Germans.

The harvest was in 1903: 36 293 tonnes of wheat, 1,302,914 tons of rye, 502 807 tonnes of oats, 14,350 tons of peas, 4658 tons and 641 371 tons of buckwheat potatoes. Also, hemp, sugar beets (1903: 82 232 tonnes) and tobacco (1903: 9.1 million kg ) were grown. The cattle stood at 1903: 538,000 head of cattle, 1,595,000 gross and 160,000 fine wool sheep and 280,000 pigs. Horse breeding was significant and famous, she delivered as exquisitely well-known trotter. They counted 1900 226 studs with 6742 breeding animals. On the whole, 605,000 horses were present in the province. The value of industrial production in 1900 amounted to 20.4 million rubles at 635 establishments with 16,274 workers. Main industries were distillery ( 6.5 million ), sugar production ( 2.4 million ), tobacco ( 1.6 million ), cloth-making etc. The grain and livestock trade was very important.
