Ryazan Governorate

The government of Ryazan (Russian Рязанская губерния / Rjasanskaja Gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire and the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.

It bordered ( clockwise from north ) to the following provinces: Vladimir, Tambov, Tula and Moscow.

The government existed from 1796 until 1929. Compared to today's Ryazan Oblast seized it further to the north and south, in particular belonged to the north of today's Lipetsk Oblast to do so.

It included about 42,100 km ², the capital was the city of Ryazan.

In 1900 it was divided into twelve Ujesdy (circles):

Statistics

In 1897, the province had 1,802,196 inhabitants, who were consistently Russians apart from minor Ukrainian, Jewish and Tatar groups.

Economically Ryazan belonged to the central agricultural area, and the Black Earth region. Main source of income was therefore agriculture. The harvest yielded 1903 7349 tons of wheat, 625 923 tonnes of rye, 233 272 tonnes of oats, 5933 tons and 421 185 tons of buckwheat potatoes. In addition, millet, flax, hemp, tobacco also (1903: 16,167 quintals ) were built. The livestock was in 1903: 302,000 horses, 329,000 head of cattle, 768,000 ( grobwollige ) sheep and 135,000 pigs. Were mined coal, iron ore, mill stones, limestone and clay. The industry reached a production value of 23.2 million rubles (1900) 4663 companies with 32,441 workers. Principal branches were: cotton spinning and weaving ( more than 10 million rubles), iron industry, flour milling, brick - and distillery. The village cottage industry delivered Felt and Matt tissue, lace, scythes and small wooden products. The earlier significant navigation on the Oka 1900 was greatly diminished by the railway. Significantly was still timber floating and itinerant trade: the carpenters of Ryazan had spread all over Russia.
