Mikhaylov, Ryazan Oblast

Mikhailov (Russian Михайлов ) is a Russian city with 11,784 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ), located in the southwest of the Ryazan Oblast on the Oka Creek Pronja and on the highway M6.

History

The town is first mentioned in an ancient Russian chronicles in 1137. 1238 the then largest city was destroyed at the Pronja Isheslawl by the Mongols and barely rebuilt. This enabled the city Mikhailov in the 14th century to take the dominant position in the Oberpronja region. It became an important citadel in Russia's south, as here Tsar Ivan the Fourth, the new fort was built in 1546 new in the 16th century. The importance of the fortress for the whole of Russia proved in the two Polish sieges 1610 and 1618 were unsuccessful. Only after 1710, the city lost its military importance and the fortress was finally demolished in the late 18th century.

Today Mikhailov is a town in Ryazan region in the border triangle between three regions. The Michailower tissue, which is known in the city since the Middle Ages, has now become a symbol of the city and is represented in almost every article about the city.
