Boluminski Highway

The Boluminski Highway is the Hauptverbindungssstraße on New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. He leads from the capital Kavieng 264 km on the east coast of the island along to Namatanai. About 120 km from Bol Village is paved the road from there to Namatanai, the surface of coral gravel.

The highway was named after Franz Boluminski, who was from 1900 to 1913 station managers and district managers of Northern New Ireland.

Boluminski was built by the people of the villages on the east coast of the island paved road to create a connection between the plantations on which mainly coconut trees were grown for copra production. The street was named Kaiser- Wilhelm -Chaussee.

Each village was entrusted with the construction and the maintenance of a section of the road. Boluminski organized competitions among the villages with rewards and threats of punishment. If a section has not been maintained and repaired, the villagers had to carry his car with the horse over the holes in the road. Despite these unusual methods enjoys Baron Boluminski sustainable popularity on the island.

1921 New Ireland was again changed back in New Ireland and the Kaiser- Wilhelm-Straße was named East Coast Road. Until the 1950s it was the best road in Papua and New Guinea. When Papua New Guinea became independent in 1975, the street was named Boluminski Highway.

The road is the main road and lifeline of the island today.
