Bonn–Oberkassel train ferry

With the ferry Bonn -Oberkassel, a railway ferry, joined the Rhenish Railway Company from 1870 to 1914 their right - and left-bank railway lines.

Construction of the railway lines

After taking over the Bonn- Cölner Railway on 1 January 1857, the Rhenish Railway built the railway line on the left side of the Rhine in sections until after Bingerbrück. With the opening of the last sub-section on December 15, 1859 received on the Hessian railway lines connecting to southern Germany. On the basis of a concession edition it was built until 1864, the Pfaffendorfer Rhine bridge below the Ehrenbreitstein and the Lahn bridge of Upper Lahnstein to Niederlahnstein with connection to the Nassau State Railway. This was taken on June 3, 1864 another railway link to Southern Germany on the right bank of the Rhine.

With gentle pressure the government Rheinische Eisenbahn then in 1866 applied for a continuation of the right bank route of Niederlahnstein on top Kassel to Troisdorf. With the authorization granted on December 24, 1866 concession, however, the railroad company received state support to connect the new rail line to the left of the Rhine near Bonn route using a Trajektes.

Construction of Trajektes

With the construction of Trajektes was started immediately. It was anticipated the material transport to the construction of the new right bank route. This was opened in 1869 to Neuwied and 27 October 1869 to Upper Kassel together with the ferry.

The ferry essentially corresponded to the two of ferry tested the Rhenish Railway in Spyck and Rheinhaus who went into operation in 1865 and 1866. In Bonn, Fährponten crossed also with private drive between two wire ropes the current, but here at an angle of 45 ° against the current in the direction of Upper Kassel. The three designated routes were completed in 1868, 1870 and the last in 1873. The ramps from the shore station to the water received a slope of 1: 38 The three Fährponten each had a length of 70 meters and were 9.50 meters wide. Each could either carry up to ten freight cars or seven passenger car or a locomotive.

The Trajektbahn bog behind the Oberkassel left towards the shore. On the Bonner page was built near the banks of the Bonn station - Ferry, who operated the local industry until after the Second World War. The track reached at the block location Kessenich the main line and led from 1870 on a separate track to Bonn main station. This track is still partially present but no longer operational; it is off the track Bad Godesberg Bonn in the area of Strasbourg way - Emperor Road to just before the main train station. A well-preserved piece of track is located directly under the bridge Reuter, here are both rails to see with thresholds.

Railcars

In the opening years of the next schedule freight trains shows six daily passenger trips from Niederlahnstein to Bonn. After continuation of the right bank route to Troisdorf but shuttle trains between Bonn and Upper Kassel were only down. For these seven daily trips in each direction ranged from two Fährstraßen. The compilation took about 20 minutes ( push train to the ferry, decouple, translate, link up and pull train from the ferry. )

Here are some examples of the power Trajektanstalt:

1871: 45 280 cars and 132 locomotives

1873: 93 107 cars and 274 locomotives ( the peak year )

1879: 47,841 cars and 39 locomotives

Setting the Trajektes

The railcars was terminated at the beginning of the First World War, first tentatively, then finally on January 1, 1919. The bank facilities were still mined in the same year and stripped down to the freight depot at the Bonn Bonn- Ferry shore. In Upper Kassel on the shore was a shipyard that were using the old Trajektgleis as siding.

In Bonn, Trajektanstalt was approximately on the site of today's Konrad Adenauer Bridge. In the 1970s, it eliminated the installations as a result of the transformation of the floodplain for the Federal Garden Show 1979. Posttower Until the route is still recognizable as Franz-Josef-Strauß-Allee/Marie-Kahle-Allee today. 2012/13 was in the intersection area of Franz-Josef-Straß-Allee/Marie-Kahle-Allee and Friedrich -Ebert -Allee ( B9 ) a roundabout, the so-called " Trajektknoten ".
