Boondooma Dam

The Lake is a reservoir in Boondooma southeast of the Australian state of Queensland. It was created in 1983 after the construction of the dam on the Boyne River Boondooma below the mouth of Stuart River.

The lake has a surface area of 10 square kilometers and a storage volume of 204.2 million m³. The average depth is 11 m. The lake is very narrow and deep to limit evaporation. A sea arm contains a lot of standing timber, the other has a lot of rocks under the water surface.

Water supply

The reservoir was built to supply the Tarong Power Station and got its name, like many similar lakes, the original owners of the area. He also supplies irrigation equipment for agriculture near water.

Usually daily flow 50000-80000 cubic meters of water from the lake in the power plant. The reservoir was connected to the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project, both holding the necessary water level as well as the generation of electricity remain possible in droughts to ensure.

SunWater, the operator of the dam, just runs a program to increase the storage volume to meet the new legal requirements for dam safety. Long run, the outlet is to be laid up.

Activities

Since March 2001, the campgrounds and recreational facilities of the dam was managed by the Wondai Shire Council. Since local government areas were merged in Queensland, the South Burnett Regional Council is responsible. Visitors cabins, camping and caravan sites are available at the lake. For day-trippers also various picnic areas are available. Especially the fishing, sailing, swimming and water skiing are popular on Lake Boondooma.

Sport fishing

In the reservoir cod perch, Tiger fish and barramundi were used, whereas the Tauwels ( Tandanus tandanus ) and the Australian freshwater herring ( Nematalosa erebi ) occur naturally there. To fish you need a special permit ( Permit Stocked impoundment ). In 1993 and 1994, more than 60,000 barramundi were used in the reservoir because it was thought that this was the southernmost point at which this species could survive. So far, only a small number was captured; had more success in lakes that are closer to the coast on similar latitudes, however.

Sports Boating

The reservoir has two slipways for boats and you do not need special permission to sports boating on Lake Boondooma. There are no time limits for boaters, but a zone before the dam is closed for security for boats.
