Business

Borealis AG is a global supplier of polyethylene ( PE) and polypropylene ( PP) in the areas of infrastructure ( pipe systems and power and communication cables ), automotive, high-quality packaging and base chemicals. The plastics produced by Borealis are later processed into products such as food packaging, medical utensils, diapers, energy and telecommunications cables, auto parts and sanitary piping systems.

History of the company

Borealis was founded in 1994 by the merger of the petrochemicals business of Neste Oil (Finland) and Statoil (Norway ), Copenhagen. The name ( cf. Boreal, Boreas ) clearly refers to Northern Europe.

In 1998, the OMV petrochemical division PCD was introduced into Borealis; OMV and IPIC took over while the 50 % stake in Borealis by Neste Oil. 2005 Statoil got out of Borealis. The company moved from Copenhagen to Vienna in June 2006.

Borouge

In the industrial plant Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, which opened in October 2002, Borstar polyethylene products for the infrastructure, automotive and high-quality packaging materials are produced. The plant operates Borouge 1 cracker with an output of 600,000 tons per year and two Borstar polyethylene plants with an annual output of 600,000 tons.

In 2010, the polyolefin production capacity at the Ruwais site could be tripled by the Borouge 2 project. The investment of 4.5 billion U.S. dollars in additional cracker, a third polyethylene plant and two new polypropylene units resulted in an output increase to a total of 2 million tons per year.

The preparations for a further strategic investment in the field of polyolefin to 2013 has already begun. With Borouge 3, the annual capacity at Ruwais will be extended by a further 2.5 million tonnes. Additional investments in China and Singapore to support the rapidly growing Asian market.

Others
