Borexino

Borexino is a particle physics experiment, lower energy be explored with the coming of the solar neutrinos. The term " Borexino " is the Italian diminutive of BOREX ( Boron solar neutrino experiment ). The experiment is located in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso and represents an international group of researchers from Italy, the United States, Germany, France and Russia. The experiment is funded by various national institutions such as INFN and NSF.

The detector is a liquid scintillator, which is located in a stainless steel sphere, shielded by a water tank. The main objective of the experiment is the precise measurement of the monoenergetic neutrinos from the sun that occur when electron of beryllium - 7 in order to compare the results with the theoretical predictions (see article on proton-proton reaction). Thus, the researchers would better understand the nuclear fusion processes in the Sun's core, and also to ensure that the properties of the neutrino are better understood. Other objectives of the experiment are the measurement of solar neutrinos from boron -8, pep and CNO. There are also anti-neutrinos from the Earth's interior and nuclear power plants are measured. The project could also find neutrinos from supernovae in the Milky Way. Borexino is part of the Supernova Early Warning System.

Results

As of May 2007, the Borexinodetektor began with data collection. In August 2007, Beryllium -7 neutrinos were first measured from the Sun, where the real time measurement was carried out. The data were extended and refined in 2008.

2010 neutrinos were observed within the earth for the first time. It is antineutrinos arising from the decays of uranium, thorium, potassium, and rubidium.

Published in 2011 the experiment, a precision measurement of beryllium -7 neutrinos from the sun, and in the same year solar neutrinos from pep reactions.

In 2012 she published the results of measurements of the velocity of CNGS neutrinos from CERN to Gran Sasso. The results were in accordance with the speed of light. See measurements of neutrino speed.
