The rural community Borgarfjorður ( Isl: Borgarfjarðarhreppur ) is located in the east of Iceland in the region Austurland on Borgarfjörður eystri.

On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 142 inhabitants. The main town Bakkagerði (such as the fjord is also called Borgarfjorður eystri ) had 93 inhabitants.

History

In 1972, the rural community Loðmundarfjörður ( Loðmundarfjarðarhreppur ) was incorporated.

Geography and transport

In the West, includes the community Fljótsdalshérað, in the south, the municipality of Seydisfjörður.

The municipal area of Borgarfjorður are the Dyrfjöll and the mountain Hvítserkur. The area is the second largest Rhyolithgebiet Islands.

The capital of the province, Bakkagerði, has a harbor. About a road south you reach the abandoned place Húsavík and the Loðmundarfjörður.

Population Development

After years of population decline, as in many communities, Iceland, again experienced a stabilization or even growth of the population.
